Don't wait until you are burgled to install a security alarm system

Many homeowners only think seriously about installing a security alarm system after a break-in has already happened. By then, the damage may already be done — not just to property, but to your sense of safety at home.

A break-in can be distressing, costly and disruptive. Stolen jewellery, personal items, electronics, tools and sentimental belongings are often difficult or impossible to replace. More importantly, many people feel less secure in their own home after someone has entered without permission.

Installing a reliable home alarm system before something happens is a proactive step that can help deter intruders, alert you to suspicious activity and improve peace of mind.

Why Proactive Home Security Matters

Security is often easier to plan before an incident occurs. Waiting until after a burglary can mean rushing into a decision, choosing the wrong alarm system or installing security under stress.

A proactive alarm system can help you:

• Deter opportunistic intruders
• Protect key entry points
• Receive alerts when the alarm is triggered
• Monitor activity while away from home
• Integrate alarms with CCTV cameras
• Reduce uncertainty during holidays or extended absences
• Improve overall household security habits

A security alarm system should be viewed as prevention, not just a response after something goes wrong.

Break-Ins Still Affect Australian Households

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Crime Victimisation data for 2024–25, an estimated 1.8% of Australian households experienced a break-in, and 2.0% experienced an attempted break-in.

The same ABS data showed that, in the most recent break-in incident, 69% of affected households had something stolen. Common types of stolen property included personal items such as jewellery and clothing, bicycles or sporting equipment, money, purses, wallets and tools.

These figures show why home security should not be treated as an afterthought. Even when overall crime trends move up or down, individual households can still be affected.

Property Crime Trends Vary by Area

Crime trends can vary between states, suburbs and property types. In New South Wales, BOCSAR’s latest recorded crime data shows that long-term property crime trends have fallen over time, while some stealing categories have increased in more recent reporting periods.

This is why homeowners should think about their own property risk rather than relying only on broad crime trends. A home with poor lighting, no alarm, easy side access, unsecured windows or no CCTV may still be an easier target than a well-secured property nearby.

For local data, homeowners can review the latest information from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.

The Real Impact of a Break-In

A burglary is not only about the dollar value of stolen items. Many people also experience emotional stress after a break-in because their home no longer feels as safe as it once did.

Break-ins can result in:

• Stolen jewellery, handbags, wallets and personal items
• Loss of sentimental or irreplaceable belongings
• Damage to doors, windows and locks
• Insurance claims and paperwork
• Disruption to work and family routines
• Stress, anxiety and loss of peace of mind
• Urgent security upgrades after the event

Installing an alarm system earlier can help reduce risk and give you more control over your home security before a problem occurs.

How Alarm Systems Help Deter Intruders

Visible security measures can help make a property less attractive to opportunistic intruders. An alarm system, external siren, CCTV cameras, warning stickers and good lighting can all signal that a property is protected.

A security alarm can help by:

• Detecting unauthorised movement inside the home
• Triggering internal and external sirens
• Alerting occupants or keyholders
• Sending notifications to your phone, depending on the system
• Supporting back-to-base monitoring where configured
• Working alongside CCTV cameras for visual verification

While no security system can guarantee that a burglary will never occur, a properly designed alarm system can make your property harder to target and faster to respond to.

Modern Alarm Systems Offer More Than a Siren

Older alarm systems were often focused mainly on sounding a siren. Modern alarm systems can offer far more control and visibility.

Depending on the system selected, a modern alarm may include:

• Smartphone app control
• Remote arming and disarming
• Push notifications
• Pet-friendly detector options
• Door and window sensors
• Wireless alarm devices
• Back-to-base monitoring options
• CCTV integration
• Activity history
• User codes for family members or staff

Smartphone App Alarms Give You More Control

A smartphone app security alarm system can be especially useful if you are away from home, at work, travelling or managing access for family members.

App-controlled alarm systems can help you:

• Check whether the alarm is armed
• Arm or disarm remotely
• Receive alerts if the alarm activates
• Check which zone has triggered
• Manage access for family, cleaners or tradespeople
• Monitor activity while on holiday

If your existing alarm does not have app control, you may be able to upgrade it depending on the system. Read our guide: Can I Add Smartphone Control to My Existing Alarm System?

CCTV Integration Adds Visual Verification

An alarm system tells you that something has happened. CCTV can help you see what caused the event.

An alarm system with CCTV integration can be useful for:

• Checking driveway or garage activity
• Reviewing front door events
• Monitoring side access areas
• Checking whether an alarm was caused by a person, pet or environmental issue
• Improving peace of mind while away

For many homes, combining alarms and cameras provides a more complete security setup than either system alone.

Back-to-Base Monitoring Can Add Another Response Pathway

Self-monitoring through app alerts can be useful, but it relies on you being available to see and respond to notifications. If you are travelling, asleep, in a meeting or somewhere with poor reception, you may miss an alarm alert.

Back-to-base alarm monitoring can provide an additional response pathway when an alarm event occurs. Depending on the setup and monitoring arrangement, alarm activations can be sent to a monitoring centre for action according to agreed procedures.

Monitoring may be useful for:

• Families
• Holiday homes
• Frequent travellers
• Small businesses
• Homes with valuable items
• People who want more than app alerts

Protect Entry Points Before They Become a Problem

Most home security planning should start with the main ways someone could enter the property. These may include doors, windows, garage access points, sliding doors, balconies and side gates.

Important areas to consider include:

• Front door
• Back door
• Sliding doors
• Garage internal door
• Ground-floor windows
• Balcony doors
• Side access paths
• Sheds or detached garages
• Driveways and front entries

Motion detectors, reed switches, CCTV cameras and sirens can all help create a stronger security layout when installed correctly.

Do Not Wait Until After a Holiday Break-In

Holiday periods can be a common time for people to think about home security, especially when the house will be empty for several days or weeks. However, leaving security planning until the last minute can lead to rushed decisions.

Before going away, it is worth checking:

• Your alarm system is working correctly
• App notifications are enabled
• CCTV cameras are recording
• Doors, windows and gates are secure
• Keyholder details are up to date
• Pets will not trigger false alarms
• Monitoring options are suitable

Choosing the Right Alarm System Before You Need It

The best alarm system is one that suits your home layout, lifestyle and security concerns. A basic alarm kit may suit some small properties, while larger homes may need more zones, app control, CCTV integration or professional monitoring.

Before choosing an alarm, consider:

• Whether you need wired, wireless or hybrid devices
• How many doors and windows need protection
• Whether you have pets inside the home
• Whether you want app control
• Whether CCTV integration is required
• Whether back-to-base monitoring is important
• Whether the system can be expanded later
• Whether professional installation is needed

Professional Alarm Installation Matters

A good alarm system still needs to be installed correctly. Poor detector placement, weak wireless signal, unclear zone naming or incorrect app setup can lead to false alarms and frustration.

Professional installation can help with:

• Choosing the right alarm system
• Placing motion detectors correctly
• Adding reed switches to doors and windows
• Setting up smartphone app control
• Planning pet-friendly zones
• Integrating CCTV or monitoring options
• Testing the system before handover
• Explaining how to use the alarm properly
