Exploring the Benefits of Breakglass Sensors

Glass doors, windows, shopfronts and display areas are common entry points for intruders. While motion detectors and door contacts are important parts of an alarm system, they may not always detect an attempted break-in as early as a dedicated glass break sensor.

Breakglass sensors, also known as glass break detectors, are designed to detect the sound or vibration created when glass is broken. When installed as part of a security alarm system, they can help provide faster intrusion detection for vulnerable glass entry points.

In this guide, we explain how breakglass sensors work, where they are useful, and why they can be a valuable addition to home and business alarm systems.

What Is a Breakglass Sensor?

A breakglass sensor is an alarm detector designed to identify the specific sound frequency, vibration or pattern associated with breaking glass. Depending on the model, it may detect glass breakage through audio detection, shock detection, vibration sensing or a combination of detection methods.

Breakglass sensors are commonly used to protect:

• Windows
• Glass sliding doors
• Shopfront glass
• Display cabinets
• Office partitions
• Reception areas
• Commercial entry doors
• Ground-floor glass entry points

Immediate Intrusion Detection

One of the biggest benefits of a breakglass sensor is early detection. If an intruder attempts to enter by smashing a window or glass door, the detector can trigger the alarm before the intruder moves further inside the property.

This is especially useful for properties with large glass areas, such as retail stores, offices, showrooms, medical suites and homes with sliding doors or extensive windows.

Fast detection can help:

• Activate the alarm system sooner
• Deter the intruder before they enter further
• Alert occupants, owners or nominated contacts
• Trigger app notifications where supported
• Report an alarm event to a monitoring centre if the system is professionally monitored

A Strong Deterrent for Intruders

Visible security devices can discourage attempted break-ins. When a property has alarm signage, sirens, CCTV cameras and breakglass sensors installed, it signals that forced entry is more likely to be detected.

For businesses, breakglass sensors can be particularly useful after hours when shopfronts, windows and glass doors are more exposed. For homes, they can provide added protection for ground-floor windows, rear sliding doors and other vulnerable areas.

Better Coverage for Vulnerable Glass Areas

Windows and glass doors are common weak points in both residential and commercial properties. Standard reed switches can detect when a door or window is opened, but they may not detect glass being smashed if the frame itself remains closed.

Breakglass sensors help fill this security gap by detecting the glass break event itself. This can make them a smart addition to alarm systems that already include:

• Motion detectors
• Door and window reed switches
• Internal and external sirens
• Surveillance cameras
• Back-to-base alarm monitoring

Ideal for Homes, Shops and Commercial Premises

Breakglass sensors can be useful in many different environments. The right installation depends on the glass type, room layout, detector range, ceiling height, background noise and alarm system compatibility.

Reliable Detection When Installed Correctly

Modern glass break sensors are designed to recognise the unique sound or vibration patterns associated with breaking glass. When correctly selected and installed, they can help reduce the chance of false alarms from everyday noises.

Correct installation is important because performance can be affected by:

• Distance from the protected glass
• Room size and shape
• Glass type and thickness
• Curtains, blinds or heavy furnishings
• Background noise levels
• Mounting position
• Whether the detector is wired or wireless

For best results, a licensed security installer should confirm the right detector location and test the device as part of the alarm system setup.

Integration with Existing Alarm Systems

Breakglass sensors can often be added to new or existing security alarm systems, depending on compatibility. They work best as part of a layered alarm design alongside motion detectors, reed switches, sirens, keypads and monitoring options.

A well-designed alarm system may include:

• Reed switches on doors and selected windows
• Motion detectors in internal areas
• Breakglass sensors near vulnerable glass entry points
• CCTV cameras for visual verification
• Smartphone app alerts
• Back-to-base alarm monitoring

This layered approach helps improve detection coverage and gives property owners more options for responding to an alarm event.

Wired and Wireless Breakglass Sensor Options

Breakglass sensors are available in both wired and wireless options. The right choice depends on your alarm panel, property layout and whether cabling is practical.

Wired Breakglass Sensors

Wired sensors are a strong option for new builds, renovations and commercial sites where security cabling can be installed neatly. They are often preferred for permanent alarm installations where long-term reliability is a priority.

Wireless Breakglass Sensors

Wireless glass break detectors can be easier to add to existing homes and businesses, provided they are compatible with the alarm system. They are useful where running new cables would be difficult or disruptive.

Breakglass Sensors for Pet-Friendly Alarm Designs

Breakglass sensors may also support pet-friendly alarm designs. In some homes, relying only on motion detectors can be challenging if pets move through protected areas. By using reed switches and breakglass sensors on entry points, the system can help protect the perimeter without depending only on internal motion detection.

This does not mean breakglass sensors replace motion detectors altogether. Instead, they can be part of a smarter alarm design for homes with pets, especially when used with selected pet-friendly motion sensors.

Popular Breakglass Sensor Options

CTC Communications supplies a range of breakglass sensors and glass break detectors to suit different alarm systems and installation needs. Compatibility should always be checked before purchase.

Bosch Break Glass Sensor DS1101i

The Bosch Break Glass Sensor DS1101i is a reliable glass break detector option designed to detect the sound of breaking glass and trigger an alarm event through a compatible security system. It can be used in homes and businesses where glass doors, windows or display areas need added protection.

Hikvision Wireless Glass Break Detector DS-PDBG8-EG2-WB

The Hikvision Wireless Glass Break Detector DS-PDBG8-EG2-WB is a wireless glass break detector option for compatible Hikvision alarm systems. It may suit homes, offices and smaller commercial spaces using a compatible Hikvision wireless alarm platform.

DSC Wireless PowerG Glass Break Detector

The DSC Wireless PowerG Glass Break Detector is another wireless glass break detector option for compatible DSC PowerSeries NEO alarm systems. It is suitable for customers wanting wireless glass break protection as part of a compatible DSC alarm setup.

Choosing the Right Breakglass Sensor

Before choosing a breakglass sensor, consider:

• Your existing alarm system brand and model
• Whether you need wired or wireless detection
• The number of glass areas you want to protect
• The size and layout of each room
• Whether the area has curtains, blinds or high background noise
• Whether the alarm is self-monitored or professionally monitored
• Whether you want to combine glass break detection with CCTV or app alerts

If you are unsure, CTC Communications can help recommend a compatible sensor and installation approach based on your property and alarm system.

Professional Installation Is Recommended

Breakglass sensors need to be positioned and tested correctly. Incorrect placement can reduce detection reliability or increase the chance of nuisance alarms. A professional installer can confirm the best location, test the device and ensure it is programmed correctly into the alarm panel.

Professional installation can help with:

• Correct detector placement
• Compatibility with your alarm system
• Programming into the right alarm zone
• Testing glass break detection
• Reducing false alarm risks
• Connecting alerts to app control or monitoring where supported

Are Breakglass Sensors Worth It?

Yes, breakglass sensors can be worth it for homes and businesses with vulnerable glass entry points. They add another layer of protection by detecting a type of intrusion that may not always be captured immediately by door contacts or internal motion detectors.

They are especially useful for shopfronts, ground-floor windows, sliding doors, display areas, offices and homes where glass entry points are a key security concern.
