Home Alarm Systems for Single Storey vs Double Storey Homes
Not every home needs the same alarm system layout. A single storey home often has more accessible windows and perimeter entry points, while a double storey home may need better zoning between upstairs and downstairs areas, garage access, stairwells and multiple living zones.
Choosing the right home alarm system depends on your property layout, entry points, pets, garage access, app control needs, CCTV integration and whether you want a wired, wireless or hybrid alarm system.
At CTC Communications, we help Sydney homeowners choose and install practical home alarm systems for single storey homes, double storey homes, townhouses, apartments, renovations and new builds.
Quick Answer: Does Home Layout Matter?
Yes. The layout of your home can affect the type of alarm system you choose, the number of zones required, where detectors should be installed and whether door and window sensors are needed.
A single storey home usually needs strong coverage around doors, windows, hallways, living areas, garages and side access points.
A double storey home may need additional planning for stairwells, upstairs movement, ground-floor perimeter protection, garage entry, balcony doors and separate arming options for different levels.
| Home Type | Main Alarm Focus | Typical Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Single Storey Home | Perimeter, entry doors, windows, hallways and garages | More ground-level access points, side gates, sliding doors and pet movement |
| Double Storey Home | Ground-floor protection, stairwells, garage access and zoning | Multiple levels, upstairs areas, balconies, separate zones and larger layouts |
Alarm System Planning for Single Storey Homes
Single storey homes often have more accessible doors and windows because the entire property sits at ground level. This means the alarm system should focus on both internal motion detection and perimeter protection.
Important areas to consider include:
- Front entry door
- Back door
- Sliding doors
- Garage internal door
- Hallways
- Living areas
- Bedroom hallway
- Laundry doors
- Ground-floor windows
- Side access points
- Sheds or detached garages
For many single storey homes, a well-designed alarm system may include a mix of motion detectors, reed switches, sirens, smartphone app control and optional CCTV coverage around driveways and external access points.
Best Alarm Features for Single Storey Homes

Alarm System Planning for Double Storey Homes
Double storey homes often need more planning because they may have multiple living areas, bedrooms upstairs, stairwells, balconies, garages and internal access points between levels.
Important areas to consider include:
- Front entry door
- Garage internal access door
- Back doors and sliding doors
- Ground-floor hallways
- Stairwell or landing area
- Upstairs hallway
- Master bedroom or retreat area
- Balcony doors
- Ground-floor windows
- Side access paths
- Garage, driveway and courtyard areas
Double storey homes may also benefit from more advanced zoning, allowing different areas of the home to be armed in different ways depending on how the household uses the property.
Best Alarm Features for Double Storey Homes
Double storey homes may need more zones and a more flexible alarm system than smaller single storey homes.
Useful features may include:
- Multiple alarm zones for upstairs and downstairs areas
- Stairwell detection to monitor movement between levels
- Garage door protection for internal entry points
- Balcony door sensors where required
- Extra keypads for convenient control
- Smartphone app control for easier management
- Pet-friendly zoning for pets staying downstairs
- CCTV integration for external areas and garage access
Larger homes may suit more expandable alarm systems such as the Bosch Solution 3000 or Bosch Solution 6000, depending on the layout and number of zones required.
Single Storey vs Double Storey Alarm Layout Comparison
| Feature | Single Storey Home | Double Storey Home |
|---|---|---|
| Entry Point Protection | Focus on doors, windows, sliding doors and side access | Focus on ground-floor access, garage, balconies and key internal doors |
| Motion Detection | Hallways, living areas and bedroom access areas | Downstairs zones, stairwell, upstairs hallway and living zones |
| Zoning | Usually simpler zoning | May need separate upstairs/downstairs or night zones |
| Pets | Pet movement may affect most living areas | Pets may be limited to one level or selected zones |
| CCTV Integration | Useful for driveway, front entry, side access and backyard | Useful for driveway, garage, front entry, side paths and courtyards |
Which Alarm System Is Best for a Single Storey Home?
The best alarm system for a single storey home depends on the size of the property, number of entry points and whether you want wired, wireless or hybrid devices.
Suitable options may include:
- Bosch Solution 2000 for smaller homes and simple layouts
- Bosch Solution 3000 for homes needing more flexibility
- Wireless alarm systems for existing homes where cabling is difficult
- Smartphone app alarm systems for remote control and alerts
A smaller single storey home may only need a straightforward alarm layout, while a larger home may need additional zones, door sensors and app control.
Which Alarm System Is Best for a Double Storey Home?
Double storey homes often benefit from a more expandable alarm system that can support additional zones, keypads, detectors and app control.
Suitable options may include:
- Bosch Solution 3000 for many family homes and medium-sized properties
- Bosch Solution 6000 for larger homes, multi-level properties and more advanced setups
- Wireless or hybrid alarm systems where cabling is difficult
- Alarm systems with CCTV integration for visual verification and external coverage

Wired, Wireless or Hybrid for Different Home Layouts?
The number of storeys is only one part of the decision. You should also consider whether cabling is practical.
- Wired alarms can suit new builds, renovations and homes where cabling can be installed cleanly.
- Wireless alarms can suit existing homes, townhouses and properties where cabling is difficult.
- Hybrid alarms can suit homes where some areas can be wired and others need wireless devices.

App Control for Single and Double Storey Homes
Smartphone app control can be useful for both single storey and double storey homes. It allows you to check alarm status, receive alerts and manage the system remotely.
App control is useful if you want to:
- Arm or disarm remotely
- Receive alerts while away
- Check which zone has triggered
- Manage family access
- Check activity after school or work
- Support holiday home security
- Coordinate with CCTV cameras

Pet-Friendly Alarm Design by Home Layout
Pets can affect alarm design in both single and double storey homes. The goal is to protect important areas while reducing false alarms caused by cats or dogs.
In a single storey home, pets may move through the same areas protected by motion detectors, so pet-friendly sensors and reed switches can be important.
In a double storey home, pets may be limited to one level, allowing selected areas to be armed differently. This can make zoning especially useful.
Pet-friendly alarm planning may include:
- Pet-friendly motion detectors
- Reed switches on doors and windows
- Careful detector placement
- Avoiding furniture where cats jump
- Separate areas for pet movement
- Custom arming modes

CCTV Integration for Different Home Layouts
CCTV can support your alarm system by helping you visually check what caused an alarm event. This is useful for both single and double storey homes.
For single storey homes, CCTV may be useful for:
- Front entry
- Driveway
- Side access
- Backyard
- Garage
- Sliding doors
For double storey homes, CCTV may be useful for:
- Driveway and garage
- Front entry
- Side paths
- Courtyard or backyard
- Balcony access areas
- Ground-floor entry points

Final Thoughts
Single storey and double storey homes have different security needs. A single storey home often needs strong ground-level protection, while a double storey home may need more zoning, stairwell detection, garage protection and external coverage.
The right alarm system should suit the layout of your home, not just the number of devices in a kit. Wired, wireless and hybrid systems can all work well when they are designed properly and installed correctly.
