How to Replace an Alarm System Battery
Important: Alarm control panels may contain mains-voltage wiring. Do not touch the transformer, power terminals or mains wiring inside the enclosure. Professional replacement is recommended if you are not experienced with alarm systems.
Step 1 – Notify the monitoring centre
If your alarm system is monitored, contact the monitoring control room before beginning. This helps prevent an unnecessary alarm response or patrol attendance.
Step 2 – Disarm the alarm system
Disarm the system and keep your user code available. Opening the control-panel enclosure may activate a tamper alarm.
Step 3 – Locate the control panel
The alarm control panel is commonly installed inside a cupboard, wardrobe, garage, storeroom or utility area.
Step 4 – Open the enclosure carefully
Use the control-panel key or remove the cover screws. Avoid touching any mains-voltage components or exposed electrical wiring inside the enclosure.
Step 5 – Remove the old battery
Disconnect the black negative lead first, followed by the red positive lead. Avoid allowing tools or connectors to bridge the two battery terminals, as this may cause a short circuit.
Carefully remove the old battery and take it to an approved battery-recycling facility. Sealed lead-acid batteries should not be placed in household rubbish.
Step 6 – Install the replacement battery
Place the new battery securely in the same position. Connect the red lead to the positive terminal first, followed by the black lead to the negative terminal.
Check that both connectors are firmly attached and that the battery polarity is correct. Replace and secure the control-panel cover, restore power if it was isolated and contact the monitoring centre to confirm that maintenance is complete.
Please note: A low-battery warning may remain displayed for several hours while the new battery charges. Contact a qualified alarm technician if the warning does not clear or the alarm system continues to report a battery fault.
